Diagnostic Imaging Northwest--a designated ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
Puyallup, Wash. — Diagnostic Imaging Northwest, has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy) .
Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that this facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.
"We are pleased to have received this special designation and three-year accreditation from the ACR," said Dr. Barbara Blankenship, Diagnostic Imaging Northwest Medical Director. “Our radiologists are located on site and available to read images in real time, order additional views if needed, and consult with the patient’s provider as needed. All images and reports are available to patients' healthcare providers through a state-of-the-art Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS) that can be accessed by the provider in their own office by computer.”
The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
In addition to the ACR Breast Center of Excellence, the Puyallup location at 222 15th Avenue SW offers comprehensive Breast Imaging diagnostics and imaging services that include Breast MRI. Patients may call Diagnostic Imaging scheduling for their regular screening mammogram at any DINWs sites located in Bonney Lake, Puyallup and Sunrise directly at 253-841-4353. For any pre-existing or advanced diagnostics, discuss your breast health with your provider.

Diagnostic Imaging Northwest announces the first extremity MRI scanner in the South Sound
TACOMA, Washington, (January 10, 2012) - Diagnostic Imaging Northwest announced today the new, extremity 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner--the only dedidicated extremity MR System in area and is now available. Patients can be scheduled to be seen in Diagnostic Imaging Northwest’s newest imaging site in the Good Samaritan Medical Building located in Puyallup by Good Samaritan Hospital.
The GE Optima is the first specialty extremity MRI available for patients in the South Sound. Designed to be more comfortable than a full-body MRI system, the GE Optima is intended for patients needing an MRI exam of extremities such as the elbow, wrist, hand, knee, ankle and foot.
The Optima features a high-strength 1.5T magnet exceeding those of a standard MRI system, and warranting image quality. The comfortable design insures less moving around -- resulting images are likely to be even more clear and consistent, securing a more confident diagnosis.
Unlike the awkward and uncomfortable positions sometimes required for extremity scanning in whole-body systems, patients can relax on a padded chair beside the scanner, reclining comfortably, much like they would in a favorite chair at home. The patient who has extreme anxiety over the closed-in tube MRI and fear of claustrophobia is eliminated by this open design.
Dr. Barbara Blankenship, DINW Medical Director, said: “Our goal is to provide patients with the right MRI scanner for their needs. Comfort and quality imaging are our top priority. For some extremity exams done in a traditional full-body MRI system, the way the patient must be positioned is not always comfortable.”
Beyond comfort, the extremity MRI’s open design reduces anxiety for those who have concerns about going into a full-body MRI system. Additionally, children may be joined by an adult in the exam room.
“With our new GE Optima MRI, patients actually sit next to the system and only the targeted body part goes into the system. This helps make it easier for them to be as still as possible for the best exam achievable. It may also mean that the patient gets in and out faster.” Blankenship said.
“The Optima allows for faster patient preparation and enhances the ease for patients,” said Keith Arnzen, CEO, DINW. “We are excited to be able to provide this new capability for our community health care providers and their patients.”
More information about the GE Optima Extremity MRI can be found here.

Are you a woman between the ages of 40 - 64 and need help getting a mammogram or paying for one?
Diagnostic Imaging Northwestin collaboration with The Breast Health Partnership of the South Sound (BHPSS) is providing screening mammograms for women in need. Patients who are underserved receive priority for these digital mammography screenings. The partnership defines underserved women as being:
-
Without Insurance
-
Without Doctor/Healthcare Provider
-
Meeting the Federal Poverty guidelines
-
Insured, but unable to afford the copay for a screening exam
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Many factors that raise the risk for breast cancer are out of your control, such as age and genetic makeup. But one thing women 40 and older can do to reduce risk is to get your annual screening mammogram.
What is a screening mammogram? What is a diagnostic mammogram? Digital mammography uses x-rays to make an image of the breast. A screening mammogram takes views of both breasts for the radiologist to review. If the radiologist should see a potential problem, he or she will ask that the patient receive a diagnostic mammogram which requires a special order from the patient’s doctor. This exam is done by the same machine, but in this case, the technologist takes several views of the area(s) in question. In most cases, this closer view shows there are no problems. But in some cases, patients are asked to have other diagnostic exams or to have an area of the breast biopsied.
Diagnostic Imaging Northwest is offering two Screening Mammogram Days for East Pierce County residents. Your appointment MUST be scheduled and confirmed 48 hours in advance of the appointment day.
To have your request for a free screening authorized and appointment scheduled, contact: Donna Banks, Good Samaritan Breast Health Coordinator, RN at 253-697-4927. All appointments are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY -- no walk-ins.
Screening mammogram and education events are available in several locations. If you cannot make these days work, and are interested in other screening events or eligibility opportunities for a FREE or reduced fee mammogram in Pierce County contact: The Breast and Cervical Program of Pierce County at 253-798-6410. For other charitable mammography services: contact Donna Banks at 253-697-4927 and ask about Her Peace of Mind program.
If you do not qualify for the underserved qualifications and would like to self-pay for your exam; a 30% cash discount is extended at the time of service; or you may request a payment plan option. If you have insurance and have not had an exam in the last 364 days, you may call and self-request an exam. Your reports will be sent directly to you. If there is a finding; your healthcare provider or the breast health navigator will be notified to allow for a follow-up exam.
If you have a referring provider, we recommend you get your annual check up and request a referral from your provider.
For all referrals, self-pay, or self requesting exams: call Diagnostic Imaging Northwest at (253-841-4353) to schedule your appointment.

| New Technology: Medical Imaging Northwest Selects Compressus for Enterprise Interoperability Show DetailsHide Details |
| Nov 11, 2008 |
November, 2008 Medical Imaging Northwest selected and placed an order for Compressus, a valuable tool for gathering the medical records that the radiologist needs to make the patient's diagnosis. This tool will be used by the radiologists who work at Diagnostic Imaging Northwest sites.
Radiologists have dreamed of a day when they would have a clear, complete virtual view of all patient information no matter where they had logged in. True interoperability transforms technology from a gate limiter to a powerful, efficient tool that enables radiologists to provide consistent care, fewer manual steps and reduced chance of mistakes. Compressus provides that view. It increases physician utilization, productivity and issues related to patient safety by ensuring access to all pertinent information.
Supporting 12 sites in Tacoma, Gig Harbor, Puyallup, Bonney Lake, Auburn, Covington and Northshore in South King and Pierce Counties in Washington State with 22 board certified radiologists, Medical Imaging Northwest (MINW) reads and creates nearly, 350,000 diagnostic imaging exams a year. MINW selected Compressus to complete an Enterprise-wide integration of its disparate RIS, PACS, voice recognition (VR) software and workstation viewers by early 2009. Involving the installation of a spectrum of MEDxConnectTM System components, the implementation is designed to provide workflow and data management, workflow viewing, patient ID management and short term archiving requirements to support its service expansion goals of handling more than 550,000 diagnostic imaging exams a year.
"MINW provides diagnostic services to patients across a broad geographic area from a large number of our satellite sites and imaging center clients. The resulting system conflicts and manual data entry and workarounds impact our productivity and reduce our ability to get the right image to the right specialist, regardless of system or location," said Andrew Levine, MD, Chair of Medical Imaging Northwest, LLP. "The MEDxConnect solution emphasizes the electronic collection and distribution of DICOM and HL7 digital imaging data with the goal of providing MINW a workflow management and integrated diagnostic solution that improves productivity and helps us manage operational costs." The MINW implementation will emphasize the electronic collection and distribution of DICOM and HL7 digital imaging data, including integrating with McKesson PACS for storage and retrieval transmission of imaging data to McKesson HRS and Kodak Carestream workstations and integration to the RIS either direct or through Cloverleaf. Another central component of the solution will be integrating to PowerScribe v. 4.8 voice recognition software for the generation of reports and addendums. According to Dr. Levine, MINW's clients will also realize greater efficiency and productivity as a result of the implementation. "The true benefactors of this implementation will be our imaging service customers and their patients. Automated pre-fetching of prior studies from disparate archives will result in better diagnostic services and fewer repeat or unnecessary exams. Combined with full integration with our McKesson PACS and multiple PowerScribe and voice recognition and dictation systems, this implementation will enable our radiologists to dramatically cut the turnaround time on reports and read more exams. Ultimately, we expect the result will be faster, more accurate and better patient care."
The integrated imaging and data management solution from Compressus is designed to support a facility's current and expanded workload and provide an infrastructure for sustained growth. Building the functionality required for remote connectivity, the system enables users to access diagnostic images and reports in the existing data stores at each facility, increasing the level of medical care while reducing the associated costs. Providing high quality and cost-effective teleradiology services is increasingly difficult as radiology practices battle both resource constraints and system connectivity conflicts. MINW went to Compressus with very specific goals for a comprehensive interoperability solution to support its high standards for quality patient care and aggressive business expansion goals.
